название:
Memento Mori (Dives in Hell)
история:
In about 1500 workshops in Northern Europe produced a number of astonishingly detailed "microcarvings" in boxwood. Traditionally such carvings have been attributed to Brabant, in the South Lowlands, but convincing new arguments suggest that they were carved in the North Lowlands or Lower Rhineland. Of these, miniature altarpieces and rosary pendants survive in the greatest numbers. This memento mori, or reminder of the inevitability of death, is more unusual. The object takes the form of a casket embellished with scenes and inscriptions referring to the parable of the rich man who refused charity to Lazarus. In the Middle Ages, that man came to identified with the name "Dives," Latin for rich, and inside the casket we see an image of Dives being tormented in hell for eternity.

Gift of Ruth Blumka, in honor of Ashton Hawkins, 1985.
